What Are the Five Most Common Isocyanates Used in Polyurethane Manufacturing ?

Isocyanates are one of the most important raw materials in polyurethane production. They react with polyols to produce polyurethane foams, elastomers, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and many other industrial products. Selecting the appropriate isocyanate has a direct impact on processing behavior, mechanical performance, weather resistance, and product durability.

Among the many types of isocyanates available, five are widely used in polyurethane manufacturing: TDI, MDI, H12MDI, IPDI, and HDI. Each offers unique advantages for different applications.

TDI (Toluene Diisocyanate)

TDI is one of the most widely used aromatic isocyanates in the polyurethane industry. Commercial grades mainly consist of mixtures of the 2,4-TDI and 2,6-TDI isomers, with TDI-80 and TDI-100 being the most common products.

Because of its high reactivity, TDI is widely used in flexible polyurethane foam, cast polyurethane elastomers, adhesives, coatings, and sealants. It provides excellent processing characteristics and is suitable for many general-purpose polyurethane systems.

However, products manufactured with TDI generally have limited resistance to ultraviolet light and may discolor after long-term outdoor exposure. For applications requiring long-term color stability, aliphatic isocyanates are usually preferred.

TDI is classified as a hazardous chemical and should be stored, transported, and handled according to applicable safety regulations. Appropriate ventilation, personal protective equipment, and moisture protection are essential during processing.

Polyether Polyols for Sealants

MDI (Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate)

MDI is another major aromatic isocyanate and has become one of the most important raw materials for modern polyurethane production.

Several commercial forms are available, including pure MDI, polymeric MDI, and modified liquid MDI.

Pure MDI is commonly used in thermoplastic polyurethane, cast polyurethane elastomers, and specialty polyurethane systems where high mechanical performance is required.

Polymeric MDI is widely used in rigid polyurethane foam, sandwich panels, insulation materials, refrigeration equipment, and construction applications due to its higher functionality.

Modified liquid MDI improves handling characteristics by reducing crystallization and enhancing processing flexibility.

Like TDI, MDI-based polyurethane products generally exhibit limited UV resistance and may yellow during prolonged outdoor exposure unless additional protective measures are used.

Polyether Polyol For Water Heaters

H12MDI (Hydrogenated MDI)

H12MDI is an alicyclic diisocyanate produced by hydrogenating MDI. Unlike aromatic isocyanates, it offers outstanding resistance to ultraviolet light and weathering.

Polyurethane systems based on H12MDI maintain excellent color stability even after long-term outdoor exposure. This makes H12MDI particularly suitable for premium coatings, transparent polyurethane products, waterborne polyurethane dispersions, optical materials, and decorative applications.

Although H12MDI provides excellent durability, its production cost is significantly higher than conventional aromatic isocyanates, limiting its use to high-value products.
