What is Spray Foam Insulation?
Spray foam insulation, also known as spray polyurethane foam insulation, is a product that is applied using a sprayer to mix two liquids. The foam expands to fill cavities and cover surfaces completely. It is commonly used to insulate walls, attics, ceilings, floors, basements, and crawlspaces. The two liquids used in the process typically include methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI), polyols, catalysts, blowing agents, flame retardants, and surfactants.
Spray polyurethane foam insulation can be used to insulate existing homes as well. It can be applied on the underside of the roof deck, under crawl spaces, on basement walls, and in new additions or home renovation projects that involve removing existing drywall. This type of insulation provides effective thermal insulation and air sealing, helping to improve energy efficiency and reduce heating and cooling costs.
Is spray foam insulation safe?
When it comes to safety, spray foam insulation is generally considered safe. However, some people may be sensitive to the fumes that are released during the installation process. This is known as off-gassing. To ensure safety, it is recommended that occupants vacate the home once the spraying begins and stay away for a period of 12-24 hours after the process is completed. This allows the foam to fully off-gas, and afterwards, the home will be completely safe to live in.
Overall, spray foam insulation is a popular choice for its excellent insulation properties and ability to create an airtight seal. It can help improve the comfort and energy efficiency of homes while providing long-lasting insulation.
