Polyurethane elastomers are widely recognized for their outstanding wear resistance, high load capacity, flexibility, and long service life. They are used in industries such as mining, construction, transportation, machinery, automotive, and material handling. Because polyurethane elastomers can be produced with different raw materials and manufacturing methods, understanding their classification is important when selecting the right material for a specific application.
The most common way to classify polyurethane elastomers is according to their manufacturing process.
Cast polyurethane elastomer, often called CPU, is the most widely used type for heavy industrial applications. It is produced by reacting a polyurethane prepolymer with a chain extender and then casting the material into a mold.
Cast polyurethane offers excellent abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, outstanding load-bearing capacity, and long fatigue life. It is suitable for manufacturing large and thick industrial parts that require superior mechanical performance.
Typical applications include polyurethane rollers, wheels, mining screen panels, scraper blades, bushings, couplings, seals, industrial pads, and other custom wear parts.
Thermoplastic polyurethane, commonly known as TPU, can be melted and processed repeatedly through injection molding or extrusion. Compared with cast polyurethane, TPU offers excellent processing efficiency and recyclability.
TPU is widely used for cable jackets, hoses, footwear components, automotive parts, electronic accessories, and medical products where flexibility and appearance are important.

Millable polyurethane, or MPU, is processed using traditional rubber equipment such as mixing mills and vulcanization systems. Although its market share is relatively small, it is still used for certain industrial sealing products and specialized rubber components.
Polyurethane elastomers are also classified according to the type of polyol used during production.
Polyether polyurethane is manufactured using polyether polyols. It is well known for its excellent hydrolysis resistance, low temperature flexibility, and resistance to moisture and microbial attack.
These advantages make polyether polyurethane an ideal choice for wet environments and outdoor applications. It is commonly used in mining equipment, marine components, conveyor systems, port machinery, and heavy-duty industrial wheels.
Polyester polyurethane is produced using polyester polyols. Compared with polyether systems, it generally provides higher mechanical strength, better oil resistance, and improved resistance to many industrial solvents.
Polyester polyurethane is widely selected for printing rollers, industrial rollers, oil-resistant seals, and precision mechanical components. However, it is generally less resistant to long-term exposure to moisture than polyether polyurethane.

The type of isocyanate used also has a significant influence on the final properties of polyurethane elastomers.
MDI based polyurethane systems have become the industry standard because they provide an excellent balance of processing characteristics, mechanical strength, and durability.
TDI based polyurethane systems have been used for many years and remain popular in various cast polyurethane applications due to their reliable processing performance.
PPDI based polyurethane offers outstanding dynamic performance, excellent resilience, and superior fatigue resistance, making it suitable for demanding engineering applications.
NDI based polyurethane provides exceptional heat resistance and abrasion resistance for heavy-duty industrial environments where long service life is essential.
Choosing the right polyurethane elastomer depends on several factors, including operating temperature, mechanical load, wear conditions, exposure to water, oil, or chemicals, and manufacturing requirements.
For applications requiring excellent hydrolysis resistance and outdoor durability, polyether polyurethane is often the preferred solution. When higher oil resistance and mechanical strength are needed, polyester polyurethane may be a better choice. For large industrial components with demanding wear requirements, cast polyurethane elastomers usually deliver the best overall performance.
