If Polyurethane foam is toxic?
Polyurethane foam is often questioned for its safety - is it toxic?
Polyurethane is a thermal insulation material made from isocyanate and polyether as the main raw materials. With the help of catalysts, flame retardants, and other additives, it is mixed through special equipment and foamed by high-pressure spraying to form a high polymer compound. Polyurethane foam can be divided into soft foam and rigid foam. Soft foam has an open-cell structure, and can be either skin-formed or non-skin-formed, while rigid foam has a closed-cell structure.
The main function of polyurethane soft foam is cushioning. It is commonly used in sofas, furniture, toys, seat cushions, and sound insulation linings.

Rigid polyurethane foam is a new type of synthetic material that combines both insulation and waterproofing. It has an extremely low thermal conductivity, only 0.022–0.003 W/(m*K), which is about half of that of extruded polystyrene (XPS) boards. Therefore, it is widely used in exterior wall insulation, cold storage, and pipeline insulation.

Many people wonder whether it is toxic or contains formaldehyde.
Polyurethane insulation materials consist of two components. The black component, also called Part A, is mainly isocyanate. According to the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), when heated or sprayed, inhalation may be harmful and can cause skin allergies, respiratory sensitization, or lung damage. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause mild irritation to the eyes and skin.
The white component, or Part B, is mainly polyether polyol. According to the MSDS, prolonged or repeated contact may cause mild irritation to the eyes and skin, but it is not toxic. Anyone interested can check the relevant information for confirmation.
Once polyurethane foam is formed, the foam itself is non-toxic. The odor during curing mainly comes from ammonia-like compounds and usually disappears within 24 hours. It does not contain formaldehyde or other harmful substances. In fact, many everyday products, such as refrigerators and water heaters, use polyurethane foam for insulation, which proves that it is safe.
If you are still concerned, you can ask for a test report from the manufacturer or have the material tested by a qualified inspection agency.
