What is NDIthane Elastomer?

Many people know that forklift wheels are made of a wheel core (steel, iron, aluminum, or plastic) and polyurethane material. However, when ordering polyurethane wheels, manufacturers usually recommend NDIthane elastomer for the wheel tread. So why do manufacturers almost always recommend NDIthane elastomer? And is it the right tread material for your wheels?

NDIthane elastomer is a professional, high-end material term. It refers to a polyurethane elastomer synthesized based on NDI (1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate). As a top-tier category among polyurethane elastomers, it is renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties, heat resistance, and hydrolysis resistance. It is often called a "high-performance polyurethane elastomer" or "engineering-grade polyurethane." NDIthane elastomer is simply a type of polyurethane material, commonly referred to as NDI polyurethane, NDI-based polyurethane, or NDI material.

Polyester Polyurethane Elastomer

NDI polyurethane delivers outstanding performance across the board, especially for monorail hoist drive wheels, earning it the reputation as the "king of wear resistance" for coal mining equipment. A typical example is NDIthane 95, which uses a cast steel wheel core with a polyurethane tread. It operates stably in temperatures ranging from −10°C to 120°C, boasts excellent mechanical properties, and has a service life of over 2,000 hours.

NDI (naphthalene diisocyanate) is an advanced raw material for polyurethane, featuring high reactivity and excellent heat resistance. Polyurethane produced from NDI exhibits superior strength, hardness, and wear resistance, making it ideal for high-performance polyurethane products such as engineering plastics and specialty elastomers.

What is the Key Properties of NDI Polyurethane?

Toughness: Extremely high tensile strength, tear strength, and modulus, while maintaining excellent elasticity and resilience, with outstanding impact resistance.

Heat resistance: Long-term service temperature reaches 120°C–140°C, with short-term tolerance to even higher temperatures. Mechanical properties degrade very little at high temperatures, far outperforming ordinary polyurethane (typically limited to <80°C).

Hydrolysis resistance: Unlike many other polyurethanes, it shows strong resistance to hot and humid environments, is resistant to hydrolytic degradation, and offers a long service life.

Dynamic performance: Low internal friction and low heat generation. It remains stable under frequent compression and bending, making it highly suitable for dynamic load conditions with strong resistance to permanent deformation.

Chemical and oil resistance: Good resistance to many oils, fuels, and chemical substances.

With excellent performance in mechanical strength, toughness, heat resistance, hydrolysis resistance, dynamic behavior, fatigue resistance, chemical resistance, and oil resistance, NDI polyurethane is widely used in high-end industrial and engineering fields with extreme material requirements.
