what is PTMEG?

CAS: 24979-97-3

Molecular formula: C4H8O

Molecular weight: 72.1057

Product characteristics:

PTMEG is a white waxy solid. It becomes a transparent liquid when the temperature is above room temperature. It is soluble in alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. However, it is insoluble in water or aliphatic hydrocarbons. As its molecular weight increases, its solubility decreases. At room temperature, PTMEG has good hygroscopicity, depending on its molecular weight, with a maximum of up to 2%.

Product uses:

PTMEG is an important raw material for the production of polyurethane (such as PU fibers, polyurethane elastomers, synthetic leather, coating additives, adhesives, sealants), polyesters, and polyamides.

Storage and transportation:

PTMEG should be stored in a completely sealed container sealed with dry nitrogen gas. The container must have heating equipment inside and outside to maintain the internal temperature of the container at around 50°C. Frozen PTMEG can be heated at around 70°C for 24 hours to melt. PTMEG should not be stored for long periods at 90°C.

Additionally, it should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from sources of heat, sparks, and open flames. Due to its hygroscopic and oxidizable nature,

PTMEG should not be exposed to moisture or air. To avoid static electricity, containers should be made of earth materials during transportation.

PTMEG is highly flammable at high temperatures. In case of fire, spray water, alcohol foam, dry powder extinguishing agent, or carbon dioxide extinguisher can be used to extinguish the fire. Gloves and goggles should be worn during loading and unloading to prevent contact with eyes or skin.

PTMG is hygroscopic and degrades when exposed to oxygen or air, so it should be sealed with dry nitrogen gas. Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol is white and waxy at room temperature, but becomes a transparent and colorless liquid when heated. If the drum has solidified, it can be kept warm at around 70°C for 24 hours to melt it. However, local heating should be avoided. When stored in liquid form, it is recommended to keep the temperature below 50°C.
