Apple's First Foldable iPhone Nears Its Launch Window: Can Polyurethane Coatings Protect Its Most Fragile Layer of Glass?
If current market expectations prove correct, September 2026 could become a pivotal moment for the foldable smartphone market.
Recent media and supply-chain reports suggest that Apple's first foldable smartphone could debut as early as this autumn. The device is widely expected to adopt a book-style folding design, with a less visible display crease, a thinner body and improved long-term reliability among its potential selling points.
Apple, however, has yet to officially confirm either the product or its launch date. Some reports also suggest that engineering and production challenges could postpone its market debut. The idea that Apple is about to launch a foldable iPhone therefore remains a well-supported market expectation rather than a confirmed fact.
Regardless of whether the device arrives this year or later, Apple's entry could place a long-established product category under an entirely new level of scrutiny. Processors, cameras and operating systems will undoubtedly matter, but the most persistent challenge lies in the display that must be folded repeatedly every day: How can the crease be minimized? How can the glass be prevented from cracking? And how can the display remain transparent, smooth and reliable after hundreds of thousands of opening and closing cycles?
Against this backdrop, a recent study on polyurethane acrylate coatings offers a new materials-based approach to protecting the ultra-thin glass used in foldable displays.
There is currently no public evidence connecting this research with Apple or its supply chain. This article does not suggest that Apple will adopt the material. Instead, it uses expectations surrounding a foldable iPhone as a starting point for examining the potential role of polyurethane in flexible-display technologies.

Why Has Apple Stayed Out of the Foldable Market for So Long?
Foldable smartphones are no longer a new concept. Samsung, Huawei, Honor, OPPO, vivo and Google have all introduced foldable devices, while Apple has remained absent from the market.
Reports about a foldable Apple device have circulated for years, with its expected launch date repeatedly pushed back. Some reports attribute the delay to persistent technical shortcomings, including visible screen creases, insufficient hinge and display durability, excessive device thickness and concerns about the long-term reliability of ultra-thin glass.
For many existing foldable devices, a visible crease may be accepted as a limitation of the current technology. If Apple intends to position its first foldable device at the top end of the market, however, its display quality, structural durability and long-term user experience will face much stricter scrutiny.
Apple's decision to enter the market therefore depends on more than whether it can build a phone that folds. The real question is whether it can reduce the compromises created by the folding structure to a level that consumers will accept.
Among all these challenges, display-protection materials are impossible to overlook.
